Saint John, NB – The Rimouski Oceanic kicked off the 46th annual QMJHL Draft by selecting forward Alexis Lafreniere of the St. Eustache Vikings with first overall pick of the 2017 QMJHL Draft on Saturday at Harbour Station in Saint John, NB.
The 15-year-old product of the Quebec Midget AAA League was the top prospect in the QMJHL Scouting Bureau’s rankings leading up to the Draft. The 6-foot, 171-pounder scored 30 goals and 83 points in only 36 regular season games with the Vikings. Lafreniere was also the 2016 Quebec Midget AAA League’s Player of the Year.
This marks the first time the Oceanic has picked first since they selected Sidney Crosby at No. 1 at the 2003 QMJHL Draft.
